The Department of Cognitive Science is committed to transcending theoretical boundaries rooted in traditional disciplines in pursuit of a scientific account of cognition. To that end, the department promotes the study of learning, perception, action, and interaction in the physical, social, and cultural world. The predominant approach is rooted in an inter-disciplinary vision employing ideas and techniques from a number of disciplines, including anthropology, computer science, ethology, electrical engineering, linguistics, neurology, neurosciences, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. We aim not only to contribute to theory but also to apply what we learn, e.g., through design. D4SD is a civic design challenge focused on bringing together our community to address complex issues in the San Diego region. Grad SLAM Semi-Final Rounds This Thursday, March 5th, is the Semi-Final Rounds for Grad SLAM 2020 at UC San Diego and we'd love to fill the room with an audience of supporters. If you're not familiar, Grad SLAM is a graduate student speaking competition where participants are challenged to explain their research and potential impact of their research in three minutes to the audience! HackXX All-Inclusive, Diversity Hackathon HackXX is UCSD's women-centric, all-inclusive, diversity hackathon that aims to foster greater gender equality in the engineering community. Designathon 2020: Tactical Urbanism for Street Safety The Tactical Urbanism for Street Safety Designathon will address areas on the UC San Diego campus that have become unsafe for pedestrians and micromobility users due to vehicle speed, behavior, and/or volume. The Ina Coolbrith Memorial Poetry Prize The Ina Coolbrith Memorial Poetry Prize is awarded for the best unpublished poem or group of poems by a UC undergraduate student. Each participating school may submit three finalists to UC Berkeley to compete. Approximately $1,100 is available annually for prizes. The UCSD Department of Literature is now accepting campus submissions, entries must be submitted to the Literature Undergraduate Office, Room 110 Literature Building, by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, December 6th, 2019.
